Welcome to the Akita Minami High School and Akita Minami “Chutobu” Junior High School homepage. As we enter the new academic year, our school in Niida Midoricho is filled with joyful students and cheerful faces. 

 

Founded in 1962, our school is approaching its 60th anniversary next year while making great achievements in its academic, cultural and sport activities over the years. 

 

Since its foundation, the school has counted close to 22,000 graduates and produced many men of talent in both the domestic and international arena. With the establishment of the junior high school “Chutobu” in 2016, a new chapter in the history for the school as a combined education system was commenced. The first cohorts of students who entered Chutobu in the first year of its conception will be graduating high school this year, making it a great milestone. 

 

At the entrance ceremony held on April 6th, 80 Chutobu and 240 high school students were newly welcomed to the school. During the ceremonial address, I asked the new students to “respect their own value systems as well as the values of others”.  At a time where the peoples of the world have fallen into anxiety over an infectious disease, I hope that students will create a new set of values that overcomes differences through cooperation and sharing of wisdom. 

 

The school’s motto ”Dokuritsu Jison” (Independence and Self-Respect), meaning “maintaining ones character and dignity without relying on others” is a phrased that describes the nobility of the effort one makes to proactively build the self based on one’s own will. The school’s founding principle of “Raising global leaders who have an international perspective and high aspirations to contribute to the betterment of their nation and community” is achieved as individual students work with others and encourage each other as a collective whole. 

 

While students only spend a few years of their long lives at this school, the period of adolescence has a special significance. With the cooperation of parents, alumni, Association for Promoting Education, and the local community members, the entire faculty and staff will do our best to ensure that the students feel glad they spent those precious years at Nanko.
